Pikes Peak Summit Experience
Drive or take the famous Cog Railway to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak, 'America's Mountain,' for panoramic views spanning 100+ miles.
Pikes Peak is Colorado's most famous fourteener and the inspiration for 'America the Beautiful.' Located about 50 miles from Canon City, the summit offers breathtaking 100-mile views in every direction and a truly memorable Colorado experience. The Pikes Peak Highway is a paved 19-mile road with stunning scenic overlooks, wildlife viewing opportunities, and access to the summit. The drive takes about 2 hours roundtrip plus time at the top. Reservations are required during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). The historic Broadmoor Manitou & Pikes Peak Cog Railway offers a unique way to reach the summit. The recently renovated railway features new Swiss-made trains with panoramic windows and carries passengers on an exciting 9-mile journey to the top. Reservations are essential and can be made months in advance. At the summit (14,115 feet), you'll find the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center, opened in 2021, featuring exhibits, a restaurant, and the famous high-altitude donuts. Allow time to acclimate to the altitude and dress warmly—temperatures at the summit are typically 30+ degrees cooler than in Canon City. For the adventurous, Barr Trail provides a challenging 13-mile hiking route to the summit, often done as an overnight trek. The trail starts in Manitou Springs and gains over 7,500 feet in elevation.
